Historical background

When the Russian navy plundered the Stockholm archipelago during the fatal summer of 1719, most of the farms on the island of Värmdö were burnt down, including Fågelbro Säteri (Fågelbro Manor), which was "burnt to the ground". Following the fire, the farm was rebuilt by its owner, D. N. von Höpken, into the austere Caroline estate still in existence today.
It was a large agricultural property with 400 fruit trees and a huge hop garden in the grounds. von Höpken’s son sold the property in 1775, and over the ensuing period until the turn of the 20th century, the estate changed hands a number of times.

During the first decades of the 20th century, the estate took on the shape it still has today. The majority of the estate barns, sheds and storehouses were added during this period. Plans were also drawn up for a large main building to be placed alongside the Caroline wings, but the project never got off the ground. The gardens were however expanded to include terraces and parks.

The property was bought by Major Allan Winge in 1932, and his heirs still own it today. It is still a farming property, even though its acreage is now smaller. The old manor farm is one of the best-preserved Caroline estates in the Stockholm area. Much of the nearby land is now occupied by one of central Sweden’s top golf clubs, which offers both an 18-hole and a 9-hole course.

The entire FågelbroHus hotel and conference centre was built in 1991. The magnificent entrance portal and clock tower of the manor’s old barn, which burned down in the 1950s, have been incorporated into the new building’s architecture.

Together with the nearby golf club, FågelbroHus Hotel offers fantastic living, golfing and recreational facilities in Värmdölandet’s historic archipelago setting.
